The story of the monkey and the art of letting go
There are moments in life when everything seems to feel heavier. You don’t know exactly why, but you feel it.
Responsibilities, expectations, relationships, even your own thoughts… everything begins to build up inside you.
And in the middle of that noise, you rarely do what matters most: pause. Truly pause.
Not just physically, but internally.
Observe. Listen. Feel.
Because many times it’s not life that becomes heavy… it’s the way you are relating to it.

From mindfulness, we understand something essential: not everything that appears in your life needs to be held onto. Not every thought deserves to be believed. Not every emotion needs to be sustained. But there is a very human tendency: to cling.
To cling to what we know.
To cling to what we believe we need.
To cling even to what hurts us.
And to understand this, there is a very simple story… but deeply revealing.
It is said that in a garden, a man had the habit of receiving visits from a small monkey. The animal came every day, curious, agile, free. It moved lightly, jumping between the trees effortlessly, without weight, without worry.
One day, the man decided to catch it. But he did not use a conventional trap. He didn’t need to chase it or force it. He placed a coconut on the ground and made a small opening, just large enough for the monkey’s hand to enter, but not enough for it to come out if it remained closed. Inside the coconut, he placed food.
That same night, the monkey came down from the tree, drawn by the smell. It approached with curiosity, inserted its hand vertically, and grabbed the food. In that moment, something changed. It tried to pull its hand out… but it couldn’t. Its closed fist wouldn’t fit through the opening. And there it remained, trapped.
Not because the coconut was a prison.
Not because someone was holding it.
But because it was unable to let go.
Freedom was a gesture away.
All it had to do was open its hand.
But it didn’t.
And this story, although simple, reflects something very deep about our own lives.
How many times have you stayed trapped in something that, in reality, you could let go of?
A relationship that no longer adds to your life.
An idea of who you think you have to be.
A fear that no longer makes sense.
A situation you maintain out of habit or insecurity.
You are not trapped by life.
You are trapped by what you do not let go of.
And this is where awareness comes in.
Letting go is not losing.
Letting go is not giving up.
Letting go is not abandoning.
Letting go is understanding that not everything you hold is helping you move forward. It is realizing that many times control is an illusion… and that true freedom appears when you stop resisting.
When you let go, you do not become empty.
You become available.
Available for something new.
For a new way of thinking.
For a new way of feeling.
For a new reality.
But that space does not appear while you keep your hand closed.
The question is not whether you can leave where you are.
The question is: what are you still holding onto that you could already let go of?
Because, like the monkey, many times the door was always open. You only had to let go.

I am Alex García: personal trainer, coach and specialist in Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP). But beyond the titles, I am someone who has chosen to dedicate my life to guiding others through their transformation journeys.
