Self-knowledge does not develop all at once. It is a process that begins in childhood, as children start to be able to recognize and name their emotions, strengths, and challenges, as well as what they like and dislike. It continues to develop over time.
There are two types of self-knowledge: private and public.
Private self-knowledge is when individuals are aware of something about themselves that others may not notice, such as feeling anxious about having to read aloud.
Public self-knowledge is when individuals are aware of how others perceive them. This awareness begins around the age of 5.
Before that age, most children do not realize that other people do not always think and feel the same way they do.
As they grow, they begin to observe and understand the differences in the perceptions and emotions of others, which helps them develop greater empathy and social skills.
